You know, a year or so ago, I don't even think I knew what D&D was, let alone thought I'd ever be playing it. XD But now I've been playing for a year or so at my brother's weekly game session and even DM'ed a few games myself.
The first game I DM'd for I was woefully unprepared. I think I had enough planned out for one small (annoying) encounter and I didn't really get enough materials to work off to interact with the players. Lots of lessons learned.
For the second one, I found a pre-made Campaign which went fairly well. I still was slow because I was looking things up and wasn't totally prepared (I should have read and studied it more), but the group had fun and it went from a one-shot to two sessions since they wanted to finish the campaign.
The third one I had to come up with on the fly so it uh. It was a thing. The first half wasn't so great, but the second part of the story worked out well and we fought a giant, Shark Bowl Ooze in honor of my fish that had just passed away. So it was a blast!
And now. Now I'm taking all those lessons and prepping to run a game on the first Sunday of January (To break up our main campaign that's been going for a year, we're trading off One-Shot campaigns and taking turns running a one-shot campaign on the first Sunday of each month).
I'm going to have all the characters planned.
I'm going to have a story written.
I'm going to have actual maps.
I made invitations to give out to everyone so they know what to prepare for and what to give me ahead of time.
Heck, I'm even making my materials look pretty with Homebrewery. (Though, I am a little sad it requires Chrome to make the most use of--like actually printing the files...I had to download a browser for one website. XD).
Come January? I'm going to be rocking it. :D

If you know your story inside and out, you don't have a problem throwing an encounter at the Party in a different place if they go off the rails (which they do). XD
It's fun! I wasn't expecting it to be, but it is. :D
